Renee brushed a lock of her long red hair out of her face and leaned forward. "Come on, Meghan," she said, "you should totally join Delta Theta. You know we have the coolest parties."
Meghan blushed and looked down at her coffee. She had had a crush on the older girl since they used to go to high school together, and Renee's posture, together with her low-cut shirt, gave Meghan a great view of the gentle curve of her friend's breasts. She had come to the New York Institute of Alchemy, where Renee was a sophomore, partly so she could be back together with her friend. Now Renee had joined one of the most exclusive sororities on campus, but Meghan was naturally shy. The party life intimidated her.
"I don't know, Renee." Meghan looked out the window at the sidewalk, where students were hurrying to and from class. "My Mom would probably be pissed. And I should really focus on schoolwork. I want to get into the Applied Magic program, and I hear it's really competitive."
"Schoolwork schmoolwork," said Renee. "College is a time for having fun. And you want applied magic? Check this out." She laid her left hand on the table for Meghan to see. She wore a tiny metal bracelet on her wrist-- at least, it looked like a bracelet. It was a plain ring of metal, almost wire-thin, that sat tight against the skin, so tight it was almost like a seam between her arm and her hand. With her other hand, Renee grabbed her left hand and twisted-- and it popped off!
"Oh my God," said Meghan. "I had heard the rumors, but I didn't think they really…"
"It's totally real," Renee grinned. On the table, her detached left hand stood up on its fingers. She held her right hand out, and her left hand 'walked' onto her right palm.
"Do you control it?" Meghan asked.
"Just as much as if it was still on my wrist," Renee said, and grinned.
The hand ran over to Meghan's side of the table, and Meghan laughed as it ran up onto her arm.
"Wow," she said, "that's weird."
"But fun," Renee chuckled. "And hands aren't the least of it. Check this out." Her hand ran back to her, and she reattached it by holding it up to her wrist and twisting it back on. Then she reached both hands up to her head. Meghan saw another thin band of metal around her neck, almost invisible, just as Renee twisted her head and popped it off.
Meghan gasped at seeing it, but Renee, now holding her head a few inches above her neck, just laughed. She set her head down on the table, and looked up at Meghan. "So what do you think? Pretty cool, huh?"
"Can I?" Meghan reached over to pick up Renee's head.
"Sure," said Renee. "Just don't drop me."
Meghan held up Renee's head in front of her face, and Renee smiled. She had always had a cute smile; it was all Meghan could do not to lean forward and kiss her right there. She blushed, and lifted Renee's head up, studying her severed neck. There was what looked like a layer of skin on her neck, where there should have blood vessels and a spine and all those other things crucial to a human body. She set Renee's head on the table, then tilted her head back a bit and rubbed the bottom of her neck. It felt like regular skin.
"Ooh," Renee closed her eyes. "Careful, that's… sensitive."
Meghan put her head back down. "Sorry."
"No, it's fine, it's sensitive in a good way. A really good way," She winked. "I just didn't want to make any more of a scene than we're already making."
Meghan looked around and blushed, noticing that they had drawn the attention of several of the surrounding tables.
"Can you hand my head back to me?" Renee's arms were stretched out, but because her head was facing Meghan, she couldn't see where she was reaching.
"Sure," Meghan said, and placed Renee's head between her heads.
"Thanks," Renee grinned. But she didn't put her head back on, she just placed it on the table next to her.
"So how do you do it?" Meghan asked in a whisper.
"Rumor has it, the sorority's founder has an in with some advanced, top-secret lab. Anyway, it's the hottest thing on campus, but no one else has access to it yet." She grinned, then held her watch up in front of her eyes. "Crap, got a meeting… I gotta go. But seriously, Meghan, you should come out. I guarantee it'll be fun." She winked at her friend again.
"Okay," Meghan looked down to hide her blush, but grinned in spite of herself. "I'll sign up."
"Awesome! The pledge week kickoff party is Saturday night. See you there!"
Renee got up and left, carrying her head under the crook of her left arm and drawing everyone's attention as she walked out of the coffee shop.
